35

Parents were married 35 years today. So as a good son I went over and had a meal with them, together with my sister and her boyfriend.

Harry Potter

Earlier today I made a comment about the amount of people that seem to be reading Potter in all the book communities.

http://www.livejournal.com/community/50bookchallenge/480699.html

I was amazed to find so many people commenting. Okay 20, still plenty for entries I write. I could have know though, since it is all the hype at the moment with the fifth book being sold out at several bookshops already.

Instead of replying every single one of them, I wrote a general response:

So, that's my 0.02 worth in this matter.

John Irving – The fourth hand (03-022)

John Irving – The fourth hand (03-022)

While reporting a story from India, New York journalist Patrick Wallingford inadvertently becomes his own headline when his left hand is eaten by a lion. In Boston, a renowned surgeon eagerly awaits the opportunity to perform the nation’s first hand transplant.

I like the idea. Even funnier is the next idea: the widow demands visitations rights with the hand? Enough to base a book on. The lion-man as he is soon known, gets to know the widow fairly well, but in the same time hasn’t got a clue what to do with her. All the typical Irving subjects are involved again in this story. New England and India, writers/journalists and circuses, Irving always manages to stay close to the things he knows a lot about, without repeating himself. This is a quality not many authors have. Therefore I think that Irving is one of the best contemporary writers in the States. He certainly is someone that falls in the category “buy the new book unseen”, I think I have read all his novels now, a few short stories and I have read the whole oeuvre. I guess I come close to being a fan.

African Scam

It's a shame, but the African Scammers aren't as good as they were anymore:

"My Name is MR NATHAN JONES ,the elder son of Mr.DANIEL JONES of
Zimbabwe.

This might be a surprise to you about where I got your contact address.

I got your(CONTACT FROM THE SOUTH AFRICA EXCHENGE NETWORK ON)LINE."

Dear Nathan,

weren't you supposed to actually put a sort of contact in between the brackets? And perhaps you could have used a spell check as well before sending me this letter (again)? The word "bsolutely" is not in my dictionary. The fact that you cut and paste this letter becomes fairly obvious when the same letter appears 11 times in one e-mail. The percentage you promise me does go down a lot if I have to share the amount with dozens of others doesn't it? Perhaps I miss out on this unique opportunity this time. I shall continue my pathetic and poor life. Good luck with your transactions!

Sincerely,

Gerben

Tour

Even though he says every day that it becomes more difficult, today his fourth victory seemed so incredibly easy. What an amazing sprinter this Petacchi.
