I start with saying I am disappointed. De Leeuw was the singer of one of my favourite bands. I spoke to him a couple of times after concerts, though more often with the bass player. He also told me it was the singer who wanted to stop playing after two decades. I admired him for writing a lot of good songs, some exceptional lyrics, but firstly for fronting a band that I enjoyed watching.

His columns weren’t bad, nor was his first book. This one, his second novel, was bought without giving it a second thought. If you’re not a Kecks fan, you might want that second thought. Comeback is the story of a regular bar guest, former rock star, contemplating a comeback. In the meantime he writes a book about another rock star. Still following me? So a former rock star writes a story about a former rock star who writes about being a rock star. Apparently some of the chapters have appeared as columns and articles in a music magazine before.

The thing is, I’ve read it quickly, but not much sticks to my mind. Not a particular chapter or even sentence I remember worth copying. To me, it seems a book by a former rock star who doesn’t know what to do after he left the band that was his life and then writes semi-autobiographical, thus avoiding any comparisons, stories. Put them together and you’ve got a book. Not a very good one, but one that a lot of his former fans will buy regardless. Not a bad book either, just don’t expect too much.
