Music meme, part eight

Day 08: A song that you know all the words to

Dozens of songs apply. I could write a book with lyrics out of the blue. Hundreds of song I can sing along as soon as I hear the song on the radio or elsewhere, though if you ask me know to recite them, I would fail miserably. To me it shows the power of music. I know a song from beginning to the end via a Karaoke bar, hadn't heard the original until I knew all the words.

As with so many people, my teenage years were defining in my musical education. Between 12 and 16 you start listening properly and your taste changes from 'anything that is popular' into 'my taste for the rest of my life'. Twenty years later I find out that it isn't as black and white as anticipated. I can sing along many eighties classic song, even though I didn't like the song back then.

The one I chose in the end represents the end of an era. It was the end of the eighties, though the song could have been seventies as well, for many the artist represents the sixties even. I was getting into older music as well, this classic stood out. I like some of the covers (it's the only song by Pearl Jam I volunteerly listen to), I love the rock version, but I simply adore this acoustic version.

Neil Young - Rocking in the free world

And for those who do not know all the words:

There's colors on the street, red, white and blue
People shufflin their feet, people sleepin in their shoes
But there's a warnin sign on the road ahead
There's a lot of people sayin wed be better off dead
Don't feel like satan but Im to them
So I try to forget it anyway I can

Keep on rockin in the free world
Keep on rockin in the free world
Keep on rockin in the free world
Keep on rockin in the free world

I see a woman in the night with a baby in her hand
Under an old street light near a garbage can
Now, she's put the kid away and she's gone to get a hit
She hates her life and what she's done to it
That's one more kid thatll never go to school
Never get to fall in love, never get to be cool

Keep on rockin in the free world
Keep on rockin in the free world
Keep on rockin in the free world
Keep on rockin in the free world

We got a thousand points of light for the homeless man
We got a kindler, gentler, machine gun hand
Weve got department stores and toilet paper
Got styrofoam boxes for the ozone layer
Got a man of the people says keep hope alive
Got fuel to burn, got roads to drive

Keep on rockin in the free world
Keep on rockin in the free world
Keep on rockin in the free world
Keep on rockin in the free world
