Day 26 - A song that you can play on an instrument

Like many during primary school, I started a band. It seemed cool and it got you a lot of attention. I wasn't any good at music though, quite a disadvantage in a band. I had some toy drums, but couldn't play them. I ended up singing. Not good, but I remembered the words, good enough to be the singer. That was in fourth grade.

In sixth grade we actually did play a proper song. One we wrote ourselves. And I played a little electric organ. I couldn't read notes, had to remember the keys by their numbers and played the song like it was a range of numbers. Our 'Milkshake blues' was the only song I ever played live, with an audience. (Un)Fortunately there is no evidence (digital/analog) for that feat nearly thirty years ago.

Three years later, secondary school I have to play one song for a grade. By then I already noticed that following the charts was about as close as possible for me to proper music. It was hell. I couldn't play any song on the xylophone. As all the other untalented ones I was forced to pick the easiest song available.

Ob la di by the Beatles. I had drawn the keys on a piece of paper, practiced during school breaks by tapping my fingers on the right drawn key. I missed several notes when I had to perform in front of the class. It sounded okay, though even when missing some chords. I didn't flunk, that was all I could hope for.

So because there is no Milkshake Blues on YouTube, I pick the Beatles. It can't be difficult, little kids can play it on the ukelele, people make karaoke versions of it. Gene Kelly danced to it and the Muppets can play it.

Not the best version, but perhaps the most appropriate. The Beatles live:

Beatles - Ob la di ob la da
Desmond has a barrow in the market place
Molly is the singer in a band
Desmond says to Molly "girl I like your face"
And Molly says this as she takes him by the hand

Ob-la-di ob-la-da life goes on bra
La-la how the life goes on
Ob-la-di ob-la-da life goes on bra
La-la how the life goes on

Desmond takes a trolley to the jewellers stores
Buys a twenty carat golden ring (Golden ring?)
Takes it back to Molly waiting at the door
And as he gives it to her she begins to sing (Sing)

Ob-la-di ob-la-da life goes on bra
La-la how the life goes on
Ob-la-di ob-la-da life goes on bra
La-la how the life goes on, yeah (No)

In a couple of years they have built
A home sweet home
With a couple of kids running in the yard
Of Desmond and Molly Jones
(Ah ha ha ha ha ha)

Happy ever after in the market place
Desmond lets the children lend a hand (Arm! Leg!)
Molly stays at home and does her pretty face
And in the evening she still sings it with the band

Yes, ob-la-di ob-la-da life goes on bra
La-la how the life goes on (Ha ha ha)
Hey, ob-la-di ob-la-da life goes on bra
La-la how the life goes on

In a couple of years they have built
A home sweet home
With a couple of kids running in the yard
Of Desmond and Molly Jones
(Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha)

Yeah, happy ever after in the market place
Molly lets the children lend a hand (Foot!)
Desmond stays at home and does his pretty face
And in the evening she's a singer with the band

Yeah, ob-la-di ob-la-da life goes on bra
La-la how the life goes on
Yeah, ob-la-di ob-la-da life goes on bra
La-la how the life goes on

And if you want some fun
Take ob-la-di ob-la-da
